Question about the Finale

I'm not super science-y, but I've been reading the wiki article that was linked a few entries back, and I still don't know if I totally understand what "Mitochondrial Eve" is.

From what I understand, she is the person who we all can trace our linage back to using only our mothers. So any of the other colonists or natives who might have had children could be our ancestors as well, right? But they would be traced through a mix of fathers and mothers.

So if I have all of that right, wouldn't that actually make Athena Mitochondrial Eve?

Or maybe I'm just not understanding what exactly Mitochondrial Eve is, and why she's Hera rather than Athena. Can anyone explain in terms a five-year-old can understand? Since that's about how much biology I can take. *g*
